World's First Robot Prosecutor Unveiled in China

Chinese experts introduce the groundbreaking robot prosecutor using AI for criminal cases.

Chinese innovators have made history with the unveiling of the world's first robot prosecutor, leveraging cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology to handle criminal charges.

Developed and trialed by the Shanghai Pudong District People's Procuratorate, this groundbreaking robot prosecutor boasts an impressive accuracy rate of over 97% in presenting charges based on verbal crime descriptions.

The introduction of the robot prosecutor marks a significant milestone in legal technology, offering a promising solution to reduce the workload of prosecutors and allow them to prioritize more intricate tasks. According to Professor Shi Yong, project manager and director of the China Academy of Sciences' Big Data and Knowledge Management Lab, this advancement signifies a leap forward in efficiency and accuracy within the legal system.

While AI tools have been utilized by Chinese prosecutors since 2016, the robot prosecutor represents a monumental leap forward, capable of autonomously assessing evidence significance, arrest conditions, and the societal risk posed by suspects. Unlike previous iterations, the System 206 robot can perform these functions on a standard personal computer, streamlining the prosecutorial process.

Trained on over 17,000 criminal cases spanning from 2015 to 2020, the robot prosecutor is currently proficient in handling eight common crimes in Shanghai. As the technology continues to evolve, it is poised to expand its capabilities to recognize lesser-known offenses and bring multiple charges against suspects.

With ongoing updates and advancements, the robot prosecutor is set to revolutionize the legal landscape, offering unprecedented efficiency and accuracy in criminal case prosecution. This groundbreaking innovation underscores China's commitment to embracing AI and technology in advancing legal practices.
